Winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival, Gabriel Mascaro’s transfixing, life-affirming adventure sees a defiant elder flee an ageist society.
In a near-future Brazil, the government gives priority to the country’s younger generations, while older people are put away in colonies so they will not “get in the way”. But 77-year-old Tereza (Denise Weinberg) refuses to submit. Deciding to escape, she embarks on a transformative journey across the Amazon, seeking to fulfil one last wish before she loses her freedom.
Creating a vivid, detailed world, Mascaro brings warmth, laughs and a profound sense of hope to this dystopian story. Centred on a winning performance from Brazilian stage and screen veteran Denise Weinberg, The Blue Trail is an empowering and entrancingly unpredictable vision of the future that recalls HBO’s Station Eleven.
